Doctoral studies in the Academic year 2013/2014

The Faculty of Medicine as an academic institution in accordance with the Law on Higher Education provides all levels of academic grades - PhDs, academic specialists studies, academic specializations, as well as masters degrees (academic and professional).

The Law, introduced in 2005, significantly changed the character of postgraduate studies at Serbian universities. In particular, the traditional modality of obtaining a Doctor of Sciences degree by writing thesis based on mentor-guided research that lasted 3-5 years was phased out by formal/structured doctoral studies of PhD type in 2006. Latest PhD program in medical sciences was accredited in 2011 and covers a broad range of basic, preventive and clinical thematic fields. In 2013 more than 120 PhD students were enrolled in one of 15 modules, including Molecular Medicine, Physiological sciences, Ostheobiology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Reconstructive Surgery, Medical Pharmacology, Pulmology, Nephrology, Human Reproduction, Perinatology and Neonatology, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. It is important to note that PhD candidates who study basic disciplines are "employed" at the research project and therefore paid for their work. Since this scheme was not suitable for most clinical branches of medicine, clinical PhD modules were developed to allow clinically contextualized research to be used as a basis for a D.Sci. thesis. As being member of ORPHEUS (Organization for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) Faculty of Medicine Belgrade has structured all its PhD programmes according to the principles of this organization. Third possibility for MDs to obtain D.Sci. title at Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade is to write a thesis based on results published in highly ranked journals. It should be stressed that more than 60 thesis per year are defended, which represent a good indicator of the level of research at given academic institution and the Faculty of Medicine Belgrade is proud of its record.
